Wembley’s pitch is to blame for less than classic matches

Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson have continued to lay into the state of the pitch at Wembley claiming that whilst it did not lose them the game it slowed the play down to an un-bearable pace.

Wenger has claimed that the pitch is out of date and cannot be fixed as it should have been addressed well before the stadium was designed. The Emirates, he says, was designed from the pitch up, everything was built around the quality of the pitch – and it does have one of the finest surface in the game.

£800million was spent building the new Wembley yet, it would seem, very little of the cash went towards making sure the pitch would stay together during play.

Wenger has also blamed the pitch on handicapping the English National team of late as they are playing their important international fixtures on a poor pitch.

So far since the new Wembley opened its doors, it has been well reported that there has not been a memorable game to date and the weekends FA Cup fixtures and Manchester United V Tottenham in the Carling Cup Final earlier this year have highlighted the lack of decent football being played at Wembley.

With England pressing to host the 2018 World Cup and having Wembley as one of the main stadiums and no doubt the only place for the final to be played a lot of work needs to be done to improve the playing surface until England can once again host the prestigious cup. Maybe the pitch was better 1966!
