PokerStars to Host Ante Up For Africa Europe
Online poker giants PokerStars have announced that they will be adding a brand new charity event to their European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo at the end of the month.
The Ante Up For Africa Europe charity poker tournament will now take place at the final stop of the EPT’s fifth season in a bid to raise money within the poker community to fund humanitarian efforts in crisis-torn Darfur.
The tournament will aim to emulate the successes of the previous years’ Ante Up For Africa events at the World Series of Poker in Vegas on this side of the Atlantic and will be run as a €4,000 buy-in no-limit Hold’em freezeout.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Ante Up For Africa charity, who fund the work of organisations providing aid and assistance to the survivors of the situation in Darfur, Sudan, and help support political activism dedicated to resolving the crisis.
With all the money generated by the tournament being given away, PokerStars will instead present the winner of the event with a special prize package for their flagship EPT event in the Bahamas in 2010, and a whole host of A-list celebrities and big-name poker pros are expected to turn up and show their support for the cause.
Among them will be Team PokerStars pros Daniel Negreanu, Joe Hachem and Vanessa Rousso, as well as Ante Up For Africa hosts Don Cheadle and Annie Duke. Previous events have also attracted Hollywood celebrities such as Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Shannon Elizabeth and Adam Sandler, who are all also expected to travel to Europe for the tournament.
