BACCARAT ? THE GAME OF KINGS

The classic casino card game of Baccarat is unlike any other: elegant, fun and easy to play, and made world famous in the great casinos of Europe. The game is even more famous for the high stakes and high adventure portrayed in countless novels and movies, such as the James Bond series. However, the charm of Baccarat lies in its simplicity, making it attractive to both the elite, and to beginners alike, as all the moves are made for you.

The word ‘Baccarat’ is derived from the Italian word ‘Baccara’, meaning ZERO. The game originated in the 15th Century when it was played with parts of a Tarot deck of cards. Later migrating to the gambling dens of France, Baccarat became the game of choice of the aristocracy and was enjoyed by many of the Kings and Queens of Europe.

Eventually, Baccarat evolved into European Baccarat and the French game of ‘Chemin de Fer’ (French for Railroad), but Baccarat as it is known today, actually originated in England, spread to South America and was introduced to Las Vegas at the infamous Dunes Casino in the 1950s.

Thanks to developments in gaming technology, Baccarat can now be played at some of the best casinos on the internet, such as Casino Atlantis Online. Even though Baccarat is normally catered to the high roller, Casino Atlantis Online offers a quicker and slicker version of the game called ‘Mini Baccarat’, with betting limits from $1 up to $500 per hand. Now, everyone can afford to try out this classic casino game with their friends in multi-player mode.

Baccarat is played with six or eight full decks of cards, which are shuffled by a Dealer, cut by a Player, and placed in a “Shoe”, from which the cards are dealt. The table layout is very simple, with betting areas for backing the Player’s hand, the Banker’s hand and/or a Tie.

There are only two hands in Baccarat - the Player’s and the Banker’s. There are no individual hands for the players, instead these ‘community hands’ are the focus for ALL the players. You are therefore not playing against other players, you are simply betting against the cards.

In Baccarat, the highest hand count possible is nine. Ten, Picture cards and multiples of ten are counted as zero. Aces are counted as one. All cards from two to nine are counted at face value. The aim of the game is to bet on the hand that you believe will total closest to nine.

Once the bets are placed, two cards are dealt to both the Player's and Banker's hands. If a hand's first two cards total eight or nine, it is considered a "Natural" and no more cards are dealt. An additional card may be dealt, depending on the combined value of the first two cards. Third cards are dealt first to the Player's hand, then to the Banker's hand if required in strict accordance with the ‘Tableau’ or ‘Tables of Play’ (see below). Both Player’s and Banker’s hands must draw according to these fixed rules. There are no options regarding drawing the third card to either the Banker's or the Player's hand, it is therefore very easy to learn and follow.

All Player’s winning bets are paid at even money, whilst those on the Banker’s are paid even money less a 5% House Commission. If you place a bet on ‘Tie’ and it wins, you will be paid at odds of 8:1 while all other bets neither win nor lose.

Whether you are in Monte Carlo, Macau, Las Vegas or Cyberspace, Baccarat offers a great alternative to such games as Blackjack, Roulette or Caribbean Stud having a low house edge and being very easy to play. Playing online gives you the chance to polish your skills in the game at no risk by playing for fun before you decide to play for real money.

Will you back the Player or the Banker to total closest to nine? Try out this classic casino game and you will see how easy and fun it is to play. Good luck, and enjoy your gaming.
