Quick Fix Snacks for the Diehard Internet GamblerSometimes it is just too hard turn the computer off and walk away. Often times I have logged onto my computer at four in the afternoon and not exited my online casino until two or three in the morning. The fact of the matter is “when your hot your hot” and you don’t want to give up a winning streak just because you’re a little hungry. Here are five quick and easy recipes that you can whip up in less than ten minutes with things you’ll find in the fridge.
Atlantic City Peppers and Eggs (preparation time approx. 4 minutes)
This sandwich is a favorite in the Italian delicatessens throughout Atlantic City. Our version can be made in less time and with fewer ingredients in the delicatessen will ever admit.
½ of a green or red pepper (chunked)
1 clove garlic (crushed)
½ small onion (sliced)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 sub roll
1 teaspoon butter
salt and pepper
Put a non-stick pan on to medium-high heat. When hot, add olive oil, garlic, onion and green or red pepper. Cook for three minutes. At the same time, place sub roll in oven and grill 1 minute 30 seconds until toasted.
Concurrently, in a microwave proof dish, beat eggs until scrambled and pepper to taste. (do not add salt or eggs will become dry) Place eggs in microwave oven for 40-70 seconds until fluffy and cooked stirring ½ way through. Butter the toasted sub roll and fill with peppers, onions and eggs. Salt to taste.
Las Vegas Minute Steak (preparation time approx. 5 minutes)
This sandwich is best with the quality Texas steak they typically served in Las Vegas. The Minute Steak has become a staple for the professional poker hounds that earn their living grinding it out in smoky Vegas poker rooms. This dish is so popular because it can be made in just one pan, which eliminates cleanup.
1 shell steak (medium to thin cut)
1 chilly pepper (seeds removed and sliced)
1 onion (sliced)
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 sunflower olive oil
2 tablespoons cold water
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
salt and pepper
Heat frying pan on medium-high heat. Add sunflower oil and butter to pan. Once the butter is almost melted (10 seconds) add shell steak and season with garlic powder salt and pepper. When steak is seasoned, turn heat to high.
30 seconds later add chilly pepper and onion.
2 minutes following flip steak.
Wait an additional 1 minutes 30 seconds and the pour cold water onto hot frying pan to create steam. Be careful not to stand to close to the pan as the steam is hot and the oil may splatter!
One minute later your dinner is ready to eat. Additional salt and pepper may be added to taste.
This meal is so easy because there is no cleanup involved besides the one frying pan. True bachelors may even opt to eat the steak directly out of the pan eliminating the superfluous dinner plate.
Monte Carlo Chicken Breast Salad (preparation time approx. 8 minutes)
To be honest, I never had this dish in Monte Carlo, but it gets its name from the obvious French influence on this dish. It is one of the nicest meals you can make in less than 10 minutes.
1 boneless, skinless chicken breast
1 table spoon olive oil
2 tablespoons orange juice
salt and pepper to taste
French salad dressing
1 teaspoon malt vinegar
1 teaspoon soy sauce
½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
¼ online (sliced thin)
1 small carrot (shaved)
1 tomato (chunked)
¼ head lettuce
Heat frying pan to medium high and add olive oil. Next, season chicken with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Add chicken to hot frying pan. Cook for 4 minutes.
While chicken is cooking mix vegetables into a salad and season with French salad dressing, salt and pepper.
After the initial four minutes, flip chicken onto other side and cook for two more minutes before adding mix of soy sauce, vinegar and Dijon mustard.
Cook for an additional 1 minute, then add orange juice.
One minute longer and its ready eat.
Serve chicken sliced on top of the salad and imagine you are in the Casino du Paris in Monte Carlo.
The Earl’s Sandwich (preparation time 5 minutes)
Did you know that the sandwich was originally made at the behest of the Earl of Sandwich while he was gambling. The Earl couldn’t be bothered to stop playing card while he ate his dinner, so he requested that they bring him his dinner “between two slices of bread” and PRESTO! the sandwich was born.
The Earl’s sandwich is a regal combination of cold cuts that create a menagerie of flavor on your palate. You should find all of these ingredients in any decent bachelor’s refrigerator.
3 slices turkey
3 slices roast beef
3 slices ham
3 slices bacon
1 slice Swiss cheese
1 pickle (sliced thin and lengthwise)
1 loaf fresh bread
salt and pepper
Cut two slices of bread from the loaf. If the slices are uneven don’t worry because it will actually make the sandwich better. Butter one side of one slice, (this becomes the top slice) and put aside.
Next put bacon between several sheets of paper towel and place on a microwave proof dish. Microwave bacon on HIGH for 3 minutes 30 seconds or until crisp. Once bacon is done, immediately place on the slice of bread without butter (this is the bottom slice).
Now build the sandwich from the bottom up. Start by adding turkey slices, the add mayonnaise to taste. Season mayonnaise with a shake of garlic powder and a shake of paprika. On top of that add the ham, then the cheese, then the pickle slices and finally the roast beef. Salt and pepper the roast beef to taste bearing in mind that the bacon is salty so only a minimum amount of salt will be necessary.
Don’t turn your nose up at a sandwich recipe! Sandwiches will taste different depending on the order in which you build them. So follow this recipe to the letter and your sandwich won’t get to soggy, to dry, or be overpowered by any one particular flavor.
Lightning Potato Salad (preparation time 10 minutes, serves two)
This will be a savior if you have friends over gambling with you because you can double, triple, or multiply this recipe for as many people as you need.
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 teaspoon dill
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon cumin
Peal potatoes, puncture with a fork, and place in a microwave proof bowl. Add 3 tablespoons of water to the bowl and microwave on HIGH for 7 minutes.
While potatoes cook, shred carrot with peeler and put aside. Next, cut onion into thin slices and soak in cold water. Once potatoes have finished cooking (they are firm but able to be cut with a fork) place in a colander and run under cold water until the can be handled. Once cool cut potatoes into 1cm. to 1.5 cm. thick rings. Run rings under cold water to cool.
Once cool, dry with a paper towel. At the same time remove the onions from the water and dry.
Mix potato rings, onion and carrot in a large bowl with mayonnaise, dill, garlic salt, paprika and cumin.
This dish is dead easy but it looks and tastes like it takes much more effort than it actually does. Your gambling buddies will be impressed.
