Hansen: The Great DaneGustav Hansen nicknamed “The Great Dane” was born on February 13th, 1974 just outside of Copenhagen, Denmark and currently resides in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Prior to his poker career, Hansen was a ranked backgammon player resulting from his fascination with numbers and maths; he was also a youth tennis champion. Through playing backgammon Hansen ended up in New York where he became acquainted with poker players such as Huckleberry Seed and Phil Laak who introduced him to poker.
Hansen first started playing poker while attending University of California at Santa Cruz as an exchange student in 1993. To date he is the only player to win four WPT titles and his live tournament winnings are currently over $7, 200, 000.
He played his first World Series of Poker in 1996 but in hindsight he says, “I had absolutely no chance of winning, as I had never really played No-Limit Hold 'em before then. After being knocked out on the first day, I decided to start practicing more, testing new plays and experimenting with different styles. Experimentation and mixing-up my style has been part of my game ever since”.
In 2006, he made television history in the second season of High Stakes Poker when he defeated Daniel Negreanu’s 6-6 with his 5-5 on a board of 9-6-5-5-8, taking down the show’s biggest pot ever of $575, 700. In that same year, he took first place at the FullTiltPoker.com London All Star Challenge winning $100,000.In 2007, Hansen won the Aussie Millions main event, beating a field of 747 players to take home a whopping $1.2 million. Hansen was also won the first NBC’s Poker After Dark which earned him $120,000 and WPT Bad Boys of Poker tournament.His four WPT wins and five final table appearances landed him his place in the World Poker Tour Walk of Fame in the first year of its launch.
Outside of poker, Hansen spends a lot of time with his family at home. He is also an avid sports player and enjoys playing golf, tennis, squash and soccer with his friends. He believes that playing sports aids him in maintaining the physical stamina required to be a successful poker player. He also provides poker commentary for Danish and American television programmes.
Hansen is currently a spokesmodel for Danish men’s fashion line, Frank Q. He has also launched a poker community website, ThePlayr.com. In addition to that, his book “Every Hand Revealed” which details his victory in the 2007 Aussie millions has been published by Lyle Stuart Kensington.
