What is it about men that makes it impossible for us to resist the most ridiculous challenges? Wheither it's being dared to down a dirty pint of beer mixed with goodness knows what, or circumnavigating the globe in a bathtubl if there's money and (perhaps more importantly) male pride on it, you can bet there'll be some silly sod up for the challenge.

Only the other day i overheard a conversation in the Gambling office between two members of staff who were discussing how much they'd have to be paid to do their entire commute home from work walking backwards? You'd be surprised how little it would talk to persuade some of our guys to humiliate and inconvenience themselves in this manner. It's clearly more about kudos than cash.

And they're not alone. This month Barry Carter writes on the top 10 most ludicrous proposition bets of all time. They range from a man who wouldn't eat an olive even for $10,000 to the crazed antics of legendary gambler Amarillo Slim, the man who once beat a racehorse in a 100-yard dash to win a bet.

You won't believe some of the downright bizarre actions of men desperate to show all challengers that they were wrong to doubt them.
