Beginners Rules of Texas Hold’em
|
|
1. Starting with the small blind and moving in a clockwise direction, the dealer distributes two ‘hole’ cards to each player. These are a player’s personal cards and will later be combined with those in the middle to create a five card hand.
2. With the exception of the small and big blind – which are forced bets and must be posted at the start of the deal – each player then looks at their hole cards and decides whether they want to fold (discard their hand), call (put an amount equivalent to the big blind into the pot) or raise (put an amount of at least double the big blind into the pot).
3. This process continues in a clockwise direction until all bets have been match and the remaining players in the hand then see the first three community cards, known as the ‘flop’. Players combine their two hold cards with those on the flop to create their best five-card hand and then bet accordingly, with play again continuing in a clockwise direction.
4. Providing they are first to act or there is no bet in front of them, a player may ‘check’ their option – which is to remain in the hand but pass the betting initiative to the player next to act – or bet themselves for an amount equivalent to the big blind or above. If they are already facing a bet, a player can again call or raise, with the raise amount needing to be at least double the initial bet.
5. Once all bets have been matched, all remaining players then see a fourth community card known as the ‘turn’. The betting process outlined in steps 3 and 4 is then repeated again before a fifth community card known as the ‘river’ is dealt. A final round of betting follows, with the remaining players in the hand then turning over their hole cards to determine who wins the pot.
6. At ‘showdown’, all remaining players are entitled to use any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards in the middle to create the best five-card hand, with the highest-ranking hand winning the pot. If a hand that they cannot beat has already been turned face-up, a player next to act is entitled to ‘muck’ their hand without showing it by folding face down.
7. If at any point during the hand a player has committed all of their chips to the pot, they are only entitled to win only that amount, with any bets between remaining players going into a side pot. If this situation occurs, the main pot and the side pot are decided independently between the players that are entitled to win them using the same procedure outlined in step 6.
8. At the end of a hand, the dealer button, small blind and big blind all move to the left and a new deal is started. All steps are then repeated again until there is eventually only one player left with all the chips in play. This person is deemed to be the winner of the tournament.
