The Poker Stars World Championship of Online Poker is starting on Friday with a guaranteed prize pool of up to $30 million, which is double the amount from last year and makes this the biggest online gambling tournament series in the world. Overall there will be 33 tournaments, which is 10 more than last year and there will be a guaranteed prize pool of $10 million in the main event.
The main event will be held on September 21 and the winner of each event will also win a bracelet. The event has been running since 2002 and has grown steadily bigger each year representing the rapid expansion of online poker. The kick-off tournament is a $215 buy-in six-handed no-limit hold ‘em event starting at 1.30 pm E.T. and has a guaranteed $1m prize pool.
The tournament had seen some controversy last year with the overall winner ‘The VOid’, Mark Teltscher, being disqualified only days after his win for multi-accounting on another account set up by his sister, although she was knocked out early. This meant that everyone else was moved up a place and ‘ka$ino’ eventually won first prize. This also meant that Vanessa “LadyMaverick” Rousso was moved up to second place and took her biggest ever poker cash of $700,000.
To qualify, PokerStars.com will be running satellites for as little as $2.20 or you can buy in directly.
