Celtic Odds Drift After Champions League Humbling

Old Firm giants Glasgow Celtic have seen their odds of Champions League qualification drift following a 3-0 mauling in their first leg clash with Portuguese side Braga.

Neil Lennon’s side failed to register a single shot on target all game and looked like strangers throughout as an Osorio Alan penalty and goals from Uwa Echiejile and Nascimento Mathias in the second half left them with a mountain climb.

However, despite now needing to overturn a three-goal deficit at Celtic Park in the return fixture, the odds on Celtic progressing have only drifted slightly at this early stage, with Betfair amazingly rating them at 67/10 to progress to the next round.

The Scottish Premier League side are certainly a different proposition at home, but such a price looks miles short of what you’d expect to get on a team beating European top division opposition by three goals or better and should probably be avoided.

Indeed, a 3-0 victory for the home side is priced at worse than 3/1 and given that Braga were runners-up in the Portuguese Liga Sagres and have won five and drawn one in their last six, it looks as though the odds compilers are on another planet.

As such, punters looking to make any sort of decent return on the tie should be looking to lay the Scottish side as much as possible, because unless the team have a Hamish McMessi waiting in the wings, they’re going to need to perform miracles in the second leg to justify such a skinny price.
