Fulham set to appoint Mark Hughes as boss

Mark Hughes is to become the new Fulham manager, reports have suggested.

It is believed that the London club have agreed terms with the Welshman, who has been without a club since being sacked by Manchester City last December. The former striker has also previously managed Wales and Blackburn.

The man known as “Sparky” took the Welsh to the brink of Euro 2004, eventually losing in a qualification play-off to Russia. At Blackburn he reached an FA Cup semi-final and achieved UEFA Cup qualification. His 18 months in charge of City ended when he was replaced by Roberto Mancini.

Hughes will replace Roy Hodgson, who moved to Liverpool at the start of July. Fulham first approached Ajax boss Martin Jol but were forced to abandon the pursuit following resistance from the Amsterdam club.

Fulham had an excellent season last year, reaching the Europa League final and securing a 12th place finish in the Premier League.
