Pivotal Step for U.S. Online Gambling Bill this Tuesday

In what could be one of the most significant steps towards the overturning of UIGEA and the long awaited legalisation of online poker in America, Barney Frank will take his H.R. 2267 bill to a mark-up process this Tuesday. The meeting at Rayburn House will address, discuss and rewrite the Internet Gaming Regulation bill that Frank is trying to get accepted by the American government. Earlier in the week the Financial Services Committee discussed the bill and listened to testimonies from Ed Williams of the Credit Union National Association, Lynn Malerba from the Mohegan Tribe and Annie Duke, Ultimatebet.com ambassador and professional poker player.

The main arguments supporting the bill and the regulation of online poker is that it would ensure the safety and security of players as well as ease the burden on the financial institutions across America. The bill also received support from R. Bruce Josten, executive vice president for Government Affairs at the Chamber of Commerce, who said: “the United States should seek to bring that commerce on-shore and regulate it to provide appropriate protections to consumers.”

If all goes well on Tuesday the online poker world could be another step closer to regulation in America, something that will likely cause another mini boom in the poker industry and cause a major influx of new players to the game.
