It started out with so much promise, but after the first government sanctioned online casino in Canada was forced to shut down operations, just days after it opened, the mood is now a little different. Initial reports were that the casino had closed its doors to punters because of a server overload and the need for hardware upgrades, in order cope with the demand. However, it has now transpired that the main reason for the shutdown was a glitch in the site’s software which allowed certain accounts to gamble using other people’s money.

The “data crossover” glitch allowed a number of player’s accounts to view user’s sensitive data as well as wager bets using other people’s funds. The software failure will no doubt come as a major blow to the company who are the first to offer fully legalized and regulated online gambling in Canada. A spokesman for PlayNow.com, CEO Michael Graydon, was quick to address the situation and state: “We reacted very quickly and in a transparent way to the customers involved, and we will make sure this does not happen again.” The issue has now been resolved but questions will certainly still remain over the sites security in the future. With many countries monitoring the success of this newly regulated casino, we can only hope that this was little more than a teething problem and something that will never happen again.
