Mexico thrash U.S. to claim CONCACAF gold cup

Any fears that Mexico would fold on the big stage in America at the Gold Cup soccer final were well and truly dispelled at the weekend as the home team were roundly destroyed 5-0 in the final.

The massively pro-Mexico crowd of 79,156 cheered their team to victory at the Giants Stadium in what was Mexico’s 5th title and also their first victory over the U.S. in 10 years. All 5 goals came in the 2nd half with Mexico captain Gerardo Torrado opening the deluge on the 56th minute with a penalty. The Americans never recovered from that with Giovani dos Santos, Carlos Vela, Jose Castro, and Guillermo Franco all adding to the tally.

"I believe this is a great win for Mexico because we showed the pride we have in our hearts today," Giovani Dos Santos said after the game. "This is a huge step for us in the process. The win injects us with some motivation, confidence and maturity."

A dejected US coach, Bob Bradley responded: "When a goal is scored, there's always a change in the game and we didn't respond well."

At the final whistle, the Mexican players stormed onto the field, mobbing coach Javier Aguirre. They then saluted the crowd and made a tour of the pitch with the trophy in hand.

"This ends here in this locker room," Aguirre said. "We're celebrating now, but that's it. Tomorrow is another day."
