Courts Rule in Favour of Roman Abramovich in Libellous Gambling Claim Russian billionaire and owner of Chelsea FC, Roman Abramovich, has accepted a public apology and substantial libel damages at the High Court over false newspaper claims that he had lost his yacht gambling on poker.
The legal action arose following an article published in Italian newspaper La Repubblica entitled “A black year for Abramovich as he loses yacht at poker”, which the Russian’s solicitor, John Kelly, claimed caused him “distress and embarrassment”.
The report alleged that Mr Abramovich “suffered a heavy loss in a poker game and had been forced to hand over a luxury yacht worth half a million euros to cover his gambling debt,” as well as claiming his poker playing and online gambling habits had put a great deal of strain on his relationship with long-term partner Dasha Zhukova.
